GAFM Lunch & Learn Series
Freeboard above the base flood elevation has been adopted by nearly every Georgia community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Many jurisdictions also regulate critical facilities to the 0.2% annual chance flood elevation. This presentation highlights the dynamic relationship between these regulatory flood elevations through local case studies and statewide analysis, offering insight into appropriate freeboard selection for a given community. Additional higher standards, particularly those included in the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (MNGWPD) model flood damage prevention ordinance and those credited by the Community Rating System (CRS), will also be discussed, providing further best practices for local floodplain managers to pursue.
