Field Trip

Lake Lanier is the most visited lake in Georgia. It provides drinking water to almost half of Georgia’s residents and recreational and sporting opportunities for millions of visitors each year. In addition, over 200 species of birds, dozens of game fish and a variety of mammals call this lake home. This important resource is also at the center of a dispute among three states that depend on its water. Participants will explore the lake and its watershed aboard the Chota Princess II and from a variety of educational, entertaining and interactive activities conducted on shore.
Participants will use the Water Quality Index to test the water of Lake Lanier, explore the ways that humans have affected the natural water cycle, locate watersheds on simple and topographic maps, and estimate how long water remains in locations such as rivers and glaciers.
